Taipei Crafts and Design: LeatherworkingThe process to make this purse took ~6 hours and many different tools
Applying some type of paste to the rough side (inside of the purse) of the leather to smooth it out. Burnishing the raw edges with a little water and an edge slicker.
Lining up the holes and hammering them open with a hole punch fork
Stitching the sides together and applying mink oil on in the end to condition the leather
Finished by stamping letters and symbols
The end result! I have newfound appreciation for leather goods and the work behind them.
The workshop is by Hsu & Daughter and is on the second floor inside the Eslite store at Songshan Cultural and Creative Park in Taipei, Taiwan. The leatherworking lesson for making a purse costs 3900NT or ~$116. This was the most expensive lesson because the purse required the most time, instruction, and material to make. Other lessons with different end products like wallets and luggage tags are available and for much cheaper.
