what's a good first project?
A personalized cutting board checks every box. It's fast, impressive, practical, and makes a perfect gift. This tutorial walks you through the entire process from zero to finished product in under an hour.
What You'll Need
Machine: Any 5W to 20W diode laser engraver works. I used the xTool S1 20W for this build. Budget options like the Sculpfun S30 Pro work equally well. See my full comparison of the best laser engravers for beginners
Materials: Maple or bamboo cutting board (avoid boards with coatings or oils) Inkscape (free) or LightBurn (60 dollars one-time, worth it) Painter's tape (reduces smoke residue on light wood) Food-safe mineral oil for finishing
Step 1 — Design Your File
Open Inkscape and create a monogram or simple text design. Export as SVG.
Keep your design under 4 inches wide for a clean first burn. Thick fonts engrave better than thin script on wood.
Step 2 — Import Into LightBurn
Import your SVG into LightBurn. Use these starting settings for maple wood:
Power: 55 percent Speed: 4000 mm per minute Passes: 2 Line interval: 0.1mm

Step 3 — Prep Your Board
Tape the engraving area lightly with painter's tape. Focus your laser to the wood surface. Run a framing pass first to confirm placement before burning.
Step 4 — Engrave
Hit start. Total burn time for a 3-inch monogram is around 12 minutes at the settings above.
Safety note: Always run with the enclosure closed or wear OD6 plus laser safety glasses. Never leave the machine unattended during a burn.
Step 5 — Finish
Remove tape while residue is still warm. Wipe clean with a dry cloth. Apply food-safe mineral oil. This darkens the engraving and gives it a professional look.
The Result
A clean, deep monogram that looks professional and costs about 8 dollars in materials. Total time including setup: under one hour.
