I wanted the air coming into the house from the swamp cooler to be as fresh as possible. When crud builds up in the water, it is distributed to the swamp cooler pads. The air then passes through those crud-soaked pads and enters the house.
This project allows for the purging of the existing water at the homeowner's discretion. It is activated via a web browser on a smart phone via an Adafruit dashboard.
A temp sensor was added to keep track of the box's internal temperature. V3 of the project will have insulating foam added to the outside top of the box to help keep the temperature down inside in an effort to prolong the life of the components. V3 may also include a electronic signal-switchable servo that can redirect the water flow from the pads to the purge tube. This will eliminate the need for two water pumps.
A weather-proof junction box is mounted on top of the existing swamp cooler. All circuitry and wiring exists in this junction box, out of the way of the water flowing inside the swamp cooler.
When activated, a single relay turns off the pad water pump and turns on the purge pump for a specific period of time.
The breadboard, Argon, BME280, and relay are all mounted on the inside lid of the box so as not to interfere with the wiring in the bottom of the box (and to make modifications easier). Gorilla glue was used to mounted the acrylic panels to the inside of the lid. Screws were used to then mount the components to the acrylic panels.
