Cables are one of the most common sources of clutter in both workspaces and portable setups. Instead of designing a generic organizer, we experimented with a modular approach that could integrate directly into a larger hardware system while remaining fully usable as a standalone tool.
This project started from two separate community suggestions:
- one proposal for a compact cable winder
- another idea exploring how an unused camera hole on ZERO could function as a mechanical attachment point
We merged both concepts into a lightweight snap-on cable winder optimized for fast 3D printing, low material usage, and modular attachment.
Design GoalsThe project focused on several objectives:
- reduce cable clutter in portable setups
- create a lightweight and fast-printing accessory
- experiment with modular attachment systems
- encourage remixing and open hardware iteration
- validate community-driven hardware design
- snap-on mounting system
- lightweight geometry
- low material consumption
- clean cable routing
- no supports required
- modular attachment interface
- remix-friendly design
Two versions are included:
SmallOptimized for thin and short cables.
BigDeeper geometry designed for longer or bulkier cables.
Both models can easily be resized depending on cable thickness and personal setup preferences.
- Layer height: 0.2 mm
- Material: PLA recommended
- PETG and ABS also supported
- Infill: 15–20%
- Supports: not required
Recommended print orientation is flat on the base for optimal snap-fit behavior.
The cable winder uses a snap-on interface designed around a mounting point integrated into ZERO.
ZERO is a modular battery platform designed to support community-created accessories and experimental hardware extensions.
The accessory can:
- attach directly to ZERO
- function independently as a standalone organizer
- be remixed into future modular accessories
This approach allows accessories to evolve organically through community experimentation rather than remaining fixed hardware objects.
This design is released open source for makers to print, modify, and remix freely.
Possible remix directions:
- magnetic versions
- dual-cable variants
- wall-mount adapters
- travel-oriented compact versions
- quick-release systems
If you build an improved version or adaptation, share it with the community so the system can continue evolving.
Final ThoughtsThis project is less about creating a single cable organizer and more about exploring how small community ideas can evolve into modular hardware systems.
Sometimes the most interesting hardware concepts emerge from combining tiny observations into reusable building blocks.
