addiction (n) : compulsive need for and use of a habit-forming substance
It is everywhere you look. It is everything you think about.
I'm not talking about heroin, nicotine, or alcohol--this habit-forming substance is called the "smartphone."
We are quite literally attached to our phones. In social situations and downtime alike, we are completely uncomfortable without it in hand. We can't even endure a pause in conversation, much less the 5-minute walk between classes, without checking every social media app. It has truly become a modern-day addiction. This is not only a nuisance but also a hazard. Even those who choose not to text and walk are subject to the dangerous effects of secondhand phone use. At best, they involuntarily appear in the background of Snapchat selfies everywhere. At worst, they are victims of collisions with people who just had to finish that tweet before they looked at where they were going.
Now, there can be designated areas for you to scroll mindlessly through Instagram. When it's off the sidewalks, our campus will be a better place to walk and live.
