The three devices offered for the Hackster Meshtastic challenge. All three are based on Seeed Studio’s Wio Tracker L1 Series for Meshtastic, powered by an nRF52840 and featuring LoRa and GPS for mesh networking.
Wio Tracker L1 Lite — No display
Wio Tracker L1 — 1.3" OLED display
Wio Tracker L1 E-ink — 2.13" E-ink display
You will find step-by-step unboxing and unit test instructions for each of the three devices I purchased for this challenge below.
General Preparation- Make sure you have all three development kits and corresponding accessories (antenna, USB cable, etc.).
- Prepare a Windows/Mac/Linux computer with USB ports.
- Have the Meshtastic Flasher web tool ready (https://flasher.meshtastic.org).
- Install the Meshtastic app on your phone (available via Apple App Store / Google Play).
- Open the package.
- Take out the device, antenna(s), and USB-C cable.
- Inspect for physical damage.
- Note the variant: L1 Lite (no screen), L1 (OLED), L1 E-ink (e-ink panel).
- Attach the included LoRa antenna by screwing it onto the SMA connector.
- (Optional) Attach other accessories like batteries if shipped.
- Connect each device, one by one, to your computer using the USB-C cable.
- The device should power up. For OLED/E-Ink models, the screen might display a logo or prompt.
- Your computer should recognize the device as a serial (COM or tty) peripheral.
- Open the Meshtastic Flasher site in your browser.
- Select the appropriate target board (Wio Tracker L1, Wio Tracker L1 Lite, or Wio Tracker L1 E-ink).
- Click “Connect” and select your device from the list.
- Flash the latest firmware as prompted.
- Once complete, the device should reboot automatically.
4. Device Configuration
- For each device, use the Meshtastic app or Meshtastic CLI (optional) to set:
Device name (distinct for each node)
Region/frequency (915 MHz for US, etc.)
Channel settings (leave on default for basic tests)- For displays, make sure status or basic info appears (node name, battery, channel).
- Power on all three devices.
- Place them in different rooms or at least a few meters apart.
- Using your Meshtastic phone app, connect to each device over Bluetooth and check network status.
- Send a test message from one node. Observe the message being relayed by at least one of the other nodes.
- Verify receipt on all devices, ensuring mesh connectivity.
- Move devices further apart (within your property) and repeat the test.
- For OLED and E-ink models, verify that:
The screen lights up and displays essential node info.
The display refreshes after reboot and on network events.- Place each device near a window; wait a few minutes for the GPS to acquire signal.
- In the app, check for a valid GPS fix and that location information updates.
- Power-cycle each unit (unplug and reconnect).
- Ensure it boots up, rejoins the network, and basic functions work (screen/UI, GPS, mesh join).
- For the Lite version, check via app/CLI since there is no display.
- Take clear photos at each stage (unboxing, setup, display, network join).
- Log any serial output or error messages.
- If you encounter issues, note the LED/light/button sequence (varies by model).
