When I first thought about public spaces and things people regularly engage with, a drinking fountain immediately came to mind. Playing off the spiral design of the drinking fountain basin found in many buildings on campus, my graffiti stencil is a reminder of Berkeley's current drought status as a D3 Zone (Extreme Drought). It informs the drinker of the 36,660,378 Californians living in areas affected by the drought and inspires him or her to be mindful of his or her consumption of water. On campus, water seems so readily available but in many other areas water is a scarce and precious resource. These areas include Central California and Southern California, which are marked as D4 zones (Exceptional Drought). More information about California’s current drought situation can be found here.
