I made an interactive stencil, sized for the standard 5cm floor tile (most commonly found in bathrooms), which allows users to spray paint their own song. Users can insert protective mounts across a variety of note/musical notation stencils to transform grout-filled floor lines into a music staff!
I chose the musical alphabet because I wanted a stencil to augment an existing space: here, the already gridded tiles. I also wanted user control and freedom of expression for directed participation.
Instead of staring at our phones while taking a dump or waiting in a ridiculously long line after a show, we can now delight in reading a melody. Staring at the floor has never been so exciting! And restrooms, in particular, are frequently mopped: like the temporality of a musical performance, the music composed with the stencil will too wash away.
To make this yourself, just chuck the .AI files into your nearest laser cutter.
