I moved to Germany for studies and one of the common issues I faced here was change in the directions of roads which makes me difficult to cross the roads and navigate while walking or crossing the streets. There is a dedicated lane for cyclist between footpath and roads in Germany which is a very nice thing as it is good for environment as well. But I have seen whenever there is cyclist crossing the junction of 2 roads (while going from one dedicated cyclist way to another), they faced accidents or get bumped on common people or Trams or Cars (even though the vehicle drivers are more careful). This issue seems very common but can cost lives of people.
The 'Ghost Bike Indicator' project enhances cyclist safety by transmitting real-time location data of cyclists to traffic signals or nearby vehicles using LTE-M/NB-IoT-enabled hardware. This proactive system alerts drivers and potentially integrates with traffic management systems to reduce accidents which I personally faced after moving to Germany as a cyclist and as well as while walking or crossing the roads. The system improves road safety by alerting drivers to the presence of cyclists, especially at intersections, where most accidents occur. It proactively reduces collisions, ensures faster emergency response in case of accidents, and provides urban planners with data to enhance infrastructure.
The project consists of two main units:
- Cyclist Unit:
- nRF54L15 System-on-Chip (SoC): Chosen for its low power consumption and robust Bluetooth LE/LTE-M connectivity to ensure continuous real-time data transmission.
- GPS/GNSS module: For accurate location tracking.
- Accelerometer: To detect sudden impacts or falls.
- Rechargeable battery: Efficient power source with smart management.
- Roadside Unit (Optional):
- Microcontroller (I may use STM32): For receiving cyclist data and activating alerts.
- Display/LEDs: To warn drivers of nearby cyclists.
- Sound Emitter: To provide audible alerts to drivers.
The Cyclist Unit communicates data to a central server via LTE-M or NB-IoT, which processes and relays warnings to roadside units or directly to connected vehicles.
