Whenever I'm feeling uninspired I know I can stop by the local thrift store and look for new things to hack!
I found this unusual glass ice cube lamp among the old VCRs and punched out speaker cones. I knew it's frosted inner layer would pick up the light from Vetco's Party Pixels and look really cool so I bought it for $3.99!
Assembly is as simple as soldering the pixels together and double sided taping them to the plastic base of the lamp. I loaded my Arduino UNO with the strandtest sample from the AdaFruit NeoPixel library (adjusted for 8 Pixels) and mounted that to the base as well.
The fun thing will be modifying it from this point forward. You could add an audio sensor to make it switch colors and patterns based on audio input. Maybe add a proximity sensor that changes the colors as you move your hands around the cube.
