UPduino v3.0 Brings Open Source Hardware Programming Within Reach

tinyVision.ai's new low-cost board features an iCE40UP5K FPGA, onboard FTDI FT232H USB programmer, and open source toolchain.

Based on experience and feedback from their previous iteration, tinyVision.ai has announced the low-cost, open source UPduino v3.0 FPGA board.

The latest UPduino is again built around the popular Lattice UltraPlus iCE40UP5K FPGA (5.3K LUTs, 1Mb SPRAM, 120Kb DPRAM, 8 multipliers), with all pins brought out to standard 0.1" headers (included but not soldered). An onboard FTDI FT232H USB programmer means that all that's required to start programming your own hardware is a Micro-USB cable.

Other features include:

  • 4-layer board with a solid ground plane
  • 5V/3.3V/Ground to supply project DC power (<200mA)
  • Dedicated 12MHz oscillator
  • 8MB qSPI SPI Flash
  • RGB LED
  • PMOD compatible
  • Onboard 3.3V and 1.2V regulators
  • Open source schematic and layout using KiCAD
  • Integrated into the open source APIO toolchain

All boards ship with an obligatory blinking LED example, but are of course capable of so much more — including running a RISC-V CPU with room to spare.

The UPduino v3.0 is currently available for pre-order from Tindie or tinyVision's own site, with delivery expected in July.
