In Greek mythology, Sisyphus was made to roll a boulder up a mountain for all eternity. The Sisyphus Table, however, rolls a ball on a sand-filled table to create art pieces.

According to the project’s writeup, its creator, Bruce Shapiro, has come to see this as not simply a kinetic art piece, but instead as a sort of visual instrument.

What music brings to your ears, Sisyphus brings to your eyes.

These tables work by dragging the steel ball through the table with a magnetic system concealed under the surface. It’s powered by a Raspberry Pi and is available as part of a fantastically over-funded Kickstarter campaign.

It’s raised over a million dollars with several days left to go, so perhaps you’ll see one of these in a living room near you soon! In the meantime, check it out in the video below!
