Just because you work for a corporation with large pockets doesn’t mean that you can make something awesome. The attention-grabbing instrument cluster by Visteon shown below has the appearance of fine clockwork, which shockingly appears to recede back into the display in a mechanical fashion.

According to the company, the unit is only 1.09mm thick and uses organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) to show graphics in a 1920 by 720 pixel resolution. This type of display weighs less and draws less power than traditional thin film transistors (TFT). While this type of tech should look great in cars, as the price and performance improves, perhaps we will start to see this type of thing in the DIY market. We can only hope!
