As outlined in mori.london’s intro video below, flames have entertained humans since they were first able to master it. Even with electric light now readily-available, our fascination with flames hasn’t diminished. London-based artist Moritz Waldemeyer’s electronic candles aim to replicate this unpredictable beauty, using an Arduino-compatible ARM processor to turn an array of LEDs into a digital flame.
The resulting candles come housed in a cylindrical or pear-shaped glass housing, form an entertaining glow, and are programmed to flicker in a different sequence every time they are used. Though something like this could be made with a tiny OLED screen, the low-resolution display apparently only adds to its charm.
Spark your curiosity? Waldemeyer’s two products are currently Kickstarter and will debut at Milan Design Week: “Eternal Flame,” which resembles a classic candle holder, and “Midnight Oil,” a minimal interpretation of a historic oil lamp. Both look incredibly awesome!
