Filament Bulb LED Lighting Jar Shines Bright at Night

Here's a simple way to turn a jar into a light bulb.

For a diffuse illumination solution, what could be better than a literal jar of light? If that sounds interesting, then be sure to check out this build by “lonesoulsurfer.” The project is extremely simple, but he’s using a few elements to really make things shine.

First off, rather than using a run-of-the-mill LED, lonesoulsurfer is using “filament bulbs" that take three volts to work, and are described as being super bright with excellent diffusion properties. These are found in so-called Edison bulbs, which imitate the look of very early light bulbs with LEDs, or they can be purchased online with a bit of searching. While interesting, one drawback is that they are actually pretty fragile, so definitely be careful when using them. On the other hand, they’re typically sold in multi-packs, so at least you’ll have a backup if you do break one.

The bulb is powered by a pair of AAA batteries, along with thin copper wires taken from the inside of a DC motor for the connection. Two of these were stuffed into a 1mm ID copper tube, which is hard to see from the outside. Lastly, an amber colored jar is used to promote diffusion, and a small switch is installed on the top of the jar. The device should shine for a long time to come before having to replace the batteries!
