We tend to focus on devices, gadgets, and machines around here. But the truth is that presentation is as important as anything else — potentially even more important, if you’re trying to sell something. Packaging design is a thriving industry for a reason and when done right, it can really enhance customers’ experiences. BoxLab is software launching through Kickstarter that promises to make that packaging design easy for everyone.

I’ll be honest with you folks: I wasn’t sure I wanted to cover this. I consider myself a technical person and my ego had my id believing I was above “gimmicks” like fancy packaging. But if I’m honest with myself, I am impressed when the things I buy come in really nice boxes. I thought about how cool it would be if I sold something and could impress people in the same way, so I’m sure some of you will have similar feelings.

BoxLab is software designed specifically for creating custom packaging, like boxes and cartons. It has a whole bunch of built-in templates for both the physical dimensions of the packaging and the designs that go on it. With either those templates or working completely from scratch, you can design the perfect packaging. You get 3D renders, so you can see exactly what it will look like. You can even see and use mockups, which are perfect for Kickstarter campaigns and other pre-launch marketing materials.

After you’re done with the design, BoxLab will spit out the files you need to send to a manufacturer to get your custom packages.

I am the furthest thing from an expert in this arena, but BoxLab seems perfect for small business and startups that want their products to have a premium feel.

If you agree, you can get a discounted BoxLab subscription through the Kickstarter campaign until January 16th. The six-month subscription is $40 and there are discounts for longer subscriptions. Backers should receive access to BoxLab in January.
