Smart Thumb (Planter with Desk Light)

I'm in Dr. Brian Rashap's Deep Dive Coding Camp 'The Internet of Things'. Our assignment is to create a smart plant. I am calling mine Smart Thumb, although I'm sure it's already taken! Smart Thumb is a plant that waters itself and provides itself with the necessary light it needs via a grow light which also acts as a desk lamp. I'm often in the dark at my very messy desk, very disorganized just grasping at all the things most important strewn about my own chaos. I wanted to solve that problem because I know I'm not the only one.

Smart Thumb intends to be a smart planter that is also your helper. Smart Thumb will provide beautiful and entertaining light for your workspace, while at the same time keeping your plant alive and well. All you have to do is refill the reservoir when the water level is low.

There is an OLED that displays the date and time, as well as streams a feed from your Google Calendar including alarms and reminders. You will also be able to see the moisture level of your plant, which is being monitored by the Grove Seeed Capacitive Soil Moisture Sensor. When the soil reads as being too dry for your plant (settings you can adjust based on what you plant in the pot), a pump is turned on and a drip system begins filling an aeration pot underneath the planter. The aeration pot is filled with Perkolite, in my case, because I'm growing Succulents.

We also have monitors set up for air quality and dust particles, so you can keep an eye out for when to take your allergy medication or give smoking a break. So you get a space on your desk with shelves to organize your things, one that doesn't interfere with the location of your mouse while still being a comfortable distance away on the table. It provides you with light, the time, your calendar events, and it waters and lights your plant for you. You can also get a reading on the room temperature and weather outside.

There is a wireless camera that can be set to record your plant growing or allow you to watch your desk while you're away.

And, perhaps best of all, it's full of neopixels to light your space alongside the grow light. You can choose from a plethora of predetermined setting patterns, or set a custom color from the Adafruit dashboard. You can also adjust the brightness of the LEDs, or turn them off and on at any time.

This is the dream I have for what I want Smart Thumb to be. As it stands, I'm not quite there yet. I still have some basics to finish on fulfilling the assignment requirements and research to do to learn how to make all the things I want to happen into a reality.
