I made a soft glow paper lantern for Project 1: Switches & Knobs. The lantern I bought does not light up or come with an installed lightbulb holder, so I thought incorporating some light into it would be exciting and a great way to fulfill the creativity requirement of this assignment.
For this project, I used the paper lantern (hence the name), some wire, a toggle switch, two small alligator clips, and the Circuit Playground Express board. The lantern functions by switching the toggle to one side to turn the circuit board’s Neo-pixels on (in a bright orange color) and switching it to the opposite side to turn them off.
I bent the wire and placed it within the lantern to maintain the lantern's shape. Then, I wrapped the alligator clip cords around the wire to keep the circuit board steady at the bottom of the lantern. Using Microsoft MakeCode, I coded instructions so that toggle will enable the Neo-pixels to turn on and off with the flick of a switch. I set the brightness up to 255 to ensure that the light gives off a soft glow without the lighting appearing too low or too bright.
