When I was a student finding a quiet place on campus to read or study was daunting. The library was always filled with students talking on phones, playing music, or chatting. Common areas were hit or miss with droves of students roaming though, or various clubs showing up to use the spaces. Frequently I would just go home, but even then, my room mates would be playing video games, or partying. I frequently just ended up studying late at night.
I always dreamed of being able to deploy a wireless sensor network of microphones that could tell me where the quietest places on campus were. It would seem the technology is now available, affordable, and ready to be developed. That's the goal of this project, to find the quietest places. To do this I will deploy a wireless mesh network of microphones detecting audio levels in campus areas, giving both current audio levels, and data about average noise levels in given locations.
I realize that many places are inaccessible to students late at night, but with data from this project, it should be possible to find the quietest places on campus.
