Product Demo VideoProductLumiere provides optimal lighting to improve the well being of patients in hospitals and nursing homes. It has 4 main components that are connected together wirelessly through bluetooth and wifi.
At the very heart of the entire system lies the gateway. All communication between devices must pass through the gateway which is mounted at the bed side. An inbuilt accelerometer receives readings about patient’s bed side activities communicates them to the cloud in real time.
The controller is a simple smart phone application that the user can use to adjust lighting conditions.Commercial resource management systems used by hospitals can easily sync with cloud data. Patients no longer need to be abruptly woken from their sleep when attended to by a staff as they will be woken at the right time with a gentle does of bright light.
Everyone goes through 3 different phases of sleep. During light sleep, the body prepares itself for rest. Eye movements cease and brain activities slow down. Deep sleep follows with minimal brain activities. Finally, the REM cycle emerges with rapid eye movement, increased heart rate and heavier breathing. The cycle repeats itself and capturing patient’s movement gives us insight into which phase of sleep he as well as the quality of the sleep. Lumiere aims to wake patients up during their light sleep cycle, they will feel most energetic.
Recreating LumiereThe technology behind Lumiere is simple. Our idea uses LEDs to create a spectrum of lights at different times of the day. We also use commercially available circuit boards such as the Arduino and servo motors to fulfil our functionalities. We estimate a total cost of $150 to develop a working prototype for Lumiere, including the gateway and cloud system.
