For this project, I decided I wanted to make something to play a rhythm game, as I've spent many hours playing a multitude of them with all kinds of different interfaces in arcades. I chose to return to the first game I ever owned on Steam, Audiosurf, for this endeavor and I decided that a steering wheel would be the most interesting way to diegetically make my controller fit into the experience.
In this experience, the player uses a motion-sensitive wheel to control a car going down a highway, trying to hit colored blocks while dodging grey ones. By tilting the wheel left and right, the player can switch between the available lanes as the zip down the road. The wheel is made out of soft fabr
ic and an embroidery hoop as that is all I had available to me for this project.
The cpx board at the center of this device uses circuitpython to calculate the x-axis acceleration of the board to determine the player's position in the space. The board itself is sewn into the fabric that makes up the interior of the wheel, with an opening at the bottom to allow the cord to be inserted into the cpx board with ease.
