This project emerged from reading about a phenomenon called "digiphrenia" in Douglas Rushkoff’s book Present Shock, where he defines it as the anxiety we feel from receiving constant updates from our devices. As an antidote, he proposes we tune ourselves to natural cycles of time, like lunar cycles, which could help us slow down, regroup, reset, and reprioritize our self-care and family relationships.
Kairos Light builds on research on cognitive and emotional responses to lighting. It is an extension of the "Arts and Crafts" movement in architecture from the early 20th century in which designers, to balance the psychological and social effects of the industrial revolution, aimed to "bring the outdoors in.”
The hardware for the Kairos prototype uses a Particle Photon board and Flick RGBs (like neopixels) to create a cylindrical RGB LED matrix that can be "tuned" to nature. For example, you can tune the lamp to moon phases so that they are visualized in multiple locations throughout your home.
The current prototype uses a phone app to control the lights. A more natural way to communicate with the lights would be a hands-free voice activation. "Kairos, display moon phase in the dining and living room."
I conceived the Kairos Light at Ithaca Generator makerspace. Last summer, I developed the project further in the REV Hardware Accelerator. I'd love to partner with GE to bring the project to the next level.

CSSThis code created a control panel for a web-connected, cylindrical LED matrix made from "Flick RGBs" (programmable RGB LEDs designed and manufactured by Wicked Device). It allows the user to select a moon phase which would then tell the matrix to display a creative interpretation of that phase. For example, if it were set to quarter moon, half of the matrix would appear blue and the other half would display purple.
