I have been a lover of Space and Sci-Fi my entire life. After graduating from IoT (Albuquerque CNM Deep Dive 2024) I have been developing various Art-Tech projects and this one was simple enough yet creatively challenging to finish. I have been building model kits my entire life and modifying them, this project was inspired by that love plus classic space designs of the 50's and my skills of making film miniatures.
I had recently taken up model building again (using my IoT enhanced electronic skills refining my lighting and LED implementation) and was producing lots of work. Spring 2025 I was designing the original Diorama idea for a client but it fell through. Then in May 2026 the ABQ Maker Space was accepting project proposals (Grant/Stipend). I had put together a very developed comprehensive proposal for the Space Diorama that was not accepted but still had a desire to build it at some point.
In 2025-26 I have participated in the Albuquerque Bubonicon Fantasy and Science Fiction Convention and conference Art show with new model displays. The large Shadow Box Diorama was a natural progression with interactive features and wanted to make something that could publicly be displayed. This version 1 is the Beta/simplified version without a microprocessor, but still has interactive features like the motion sensor and remote control for the Display Box LED's.
I formally started the project after completing the Convention art show and had a pretty good idea what I wanted to make. I had already purchased the Model Kits on Ebay for the project idea so that was a great starting point.
Below is conceptual idea of the 3D features as a starting point.
Completed Space Diorama with interactive lighting. Display features: On/Off and Motion sensor (with 15 second timer), USB power and on board Battery system, Remote control for Display (RGB LED colors) sequencing etc. Indicator LED on side panel interface panel (Battery Power levels), Dynamic Lighting in Models/Miniatures, Custom Fiber Optic LED Starfield Background, can be displayed on table top or mounted on wall.
