An app that is used to preheat an oven remotely from inside or outside the home. Using some (very) hypothetical hardware, the app is designed to set oven features based on the user's desires and will notify if there is an issue and when the oven is set to the target temperature. As a safety feature, the app is designed to signal a shutoff if the oven is not opened within 5 minutes of reaching the target temperature.
I came upon selecting this idea as it was one that came out of my discussions with Max, one of my interviewees from Design Assignment 1.1. Plus, I thought it would be the most unique, since the hardware is a little mythological, but it would be a very cool idea if implemented safely.
After making the paper prototype for this app, I brought it with my to Jupiter to test on anyone that would be willing to try. I met Devin, whom I sat with and walked through how the app would work. His feedback was overall positive and a few notes that he gave me are as follows:
-It would be easier to use if you could set the app by how long till you are home, instead of having to calculate it by himself on the commute home.
-There are many safety concerns, which some of are accounted for in the prototype, but there are others - if there is something in the oven, it could be very dangerous to preheat the oven in such a state.
-The magic hardware must account for all sorts of different types of ovens, which I did not really consider in the prototype, which I based off of my own oven. Not all ovens take the same time to heat as well, which must be considered.
