Last week I got my new Tessel. For people who do not know, Tessel is a microcontroller that runs JavaScript. Like most microcontrollers you can add modules. One thing i wanted to add was the Adafruit NeoPixel Shield. NeoPixels are addressable LEDs. You can learn more about NeoPixel here. There was not a ton of info on how to get started so here are my trails.
Setup
When you get your shield it should have almost everything you need. You will need to know how to solder and some wire. This is what the shield should look like when you get it.
The Shield can use a lot of power so I op for the external power source. Check out Adafruit's Powering Guide. To use the external power you have to break the connection between the two gold pads just to the right of the 5V connection hole. Take a sharp knife and cut that small gold connection. When you get done it should look like this.
Take the power connector and solder it to the Ext and 5V holes. I then solder a pin to the DIN at the top of left of the board. That is it. here is what the back looked liked when i was done.
Connect to Tessel
The only thing to remember here is your power to the Shield you have to take the ground to both the shield and Tessel. Now connect ground to both shield and Tessel. Connect a shield DIN to pin 20 PCIO on your tessel. Connect the red wire to your 5v. Plug your power to the shield then the tessel and you are done.
I used npx to help run the shield. I hope this telps.
