It is a big recycle bin that unconsciously leads people to recycle by the color categorization and differentiating the height of each category's entry. A major problem of recycling trash is that people don't pay enough attention when they recycle. It is not because people are morally bankrupt but because it is so trivial. Even though people are willing to recycle in the right category, that attention only lasts for a few seconds and they just dump what's on their hands. If they fail to decide which category is the right one, they know just dumping in 'others' is a better option than dumping in a wrong category.
This recycle bin tackles this problem by colorizing each category, making it easier to decide from the range, so the people can have their time thinking which category their trash should go while they are walking toward the bin. Also, each is differentiated by height and makes it much harder to put a trash in 'others' bin, so that people think twice before they dump their trash. If the 'others' was at the same height, it would be more likely that they just carelessly dump anything in it. This trash bin was awarded the 2nd prize in Creative Convergence Project Contest held by C-School, Sungkyunkwan Univ in 2016 4th quarter.
It was a great experience making something big with teammates and was also very meaningful in that we tried to solve a community problem.
We interviewed the head of Mapo-gu's Public Sanitation Dept. to get feedback on the initial ideas and changed the item after.
The bin is made of an aluminum frame and wooden panel. Simple as it looks, it is intended for low-cost installation for public use.
