One big problem of a fisherman is, that he can't pursue his hobby at any time and any place, till now. The new app called "FischFang" makes it possible to practice the rod throw with your mobile phone. The User just swings the mobile phone while pushing and releasing a button like he would with a fishing rod. An exact physical simulation will then calculate the distance of the throw. To go one step further the app is going to allow the user to specify important settings, for example the type and weight of the rod or the weight of the fishing bait.
In the development there were a few difficulties caused by the complexity of the cast. Since this would go beyond the scope of this work, it was decided to start by simulating the cast as a normal inclined cast also known as parabolic throw.
In our application the usage of the data the sensors provided was not optimal. The only way to measure the angle towards the ground is by using the accelerometer and the gyroscope. With these two sensors, one measures the Earths gravity and the rotation of the phone to the ground. This method is completely unreliable when the smart phone is accelerated or deaccelerated.
This simplification was further reduced and the ejection angle was omitted.
For the experiments a special contraption was built, which is used to evaluate the calculated results. It has a holder for the smartphone and a little cup for the thrown weight.
Since the throwing angle was not considered in the calculation a mean deviation of about 0.14 meters was observed.
Several attempts to calculate the distance including the throwing angle were done which lead to inconclusive results. Since the throw is a rather quick and forceful movement the sensors failed to provide accurate values.
IntroThis project is created in context of the lecture “IoT Applications Prototyping” at the Brunel University / TAE Esslingen. It covers the invention of an own IoT Idea and Application from the scratch solving a real-world problem. In the lecture the MSc students learn about signal processing, pattern recognition and scientific analysis in context of IoT applications.
Smartphone Sensing FrameworkThe Smartphone Sensing framework (SSF) provides a collection of modules and a quick way to develop context aware apps on android in an experimetal way.
IoT Prototyping FrameworkThe IoT Prototyping Framework (IoTPF) is a collection of tools, modules and samples with the aim to empower students and developers creating full-stack IoT prototypes in a short time period.
