The Minino by Electronic Cats is a versatile multiprotocol and multiband tool, designed to explore and analyze wireless communications in various applications, including IoT security research. With its latest update, the Drone ID app enhances its capabilities, enabling users to better understand and test drone identification systems.
In this tutorial, we will explore Drone ID scanning and spoofing with the new Drone ID app on the Minino, whether you are interested in educational research or security assessments.
What is DroneID?🛰️Drone ID, also known as Remote ID, is a system that enables drones to broadcast identification and location data while in flight. Think of it as a digital license plate for drones, it helps authorities, airspace managers, and drone operators ensure safe and regulated airspace.
Setting Up Your Minino⚙️Before jumping into the scan or spoof functions, ensure your Minino is properly set up:
GPSSettings:For the location settings, go to: Settings > System > GPS. You will find the following options:
- Time Zone: Set your time zone based on your location to ensure accuracy.
- Enable/Disable: Ensure GPS is enabled for proper functionality.
Open the GPS application by navigating to Applications > GPS > Location. The system will display your current coordinates, which will be used in the Drone ID app when the GPS option is selected for location settings.
Internetsettings:
To view or manage saved APs, navigate to: Settings > System > WiFi. Here, you will find:
- APs Manager: Allows you to view, connect to, or forget saved APs.
Note: For the DroneID, there is no need to connect to an access point (AP), as the application establishes its own network.
- Wi-Fi Region: Allows you to set the Wi-Fi region, adjusting frequencies and channels to comply with local regulations. This ensures optimal connectivity while adhering to country-specific requirements.
The scan function allows you to detect nearby drones broadcasting their Drone ID signals. With it, you can access detailed data, including the type of drone and its precise location.
How to use the ScanFunction?
1. Open the Drone ID app by going to Applications > WiFi and selecting DroneID Scan.
2. Watch as the app animates the scanning process and locates active drones.
3. Once a drone is detected, click on it to view detailed information, such as:
- Channel: Indicates the frequency channel on which the drone was detected.
- Drone Authentication Type: Displays the security protocol associated with the detected drone.
- Current Location: Shows the real-time coordinates of the detected drone.
Note:Drone ID detection speed and accuracy depend on:- Distance/Signal Strength: Weak signals (e.g., drones far away) take longer to detect and may reduce location precision.- Environmental Interference: Physical obstructions (walls, buildings) or competing signals can delay results.Unlocking the Spoof Function🛸
Spoofing involves simulating Drone ID signals. This function is a valuable tool for testing and researching the security of drone identification systems.
How to use the Spoof Function?
1. Configure the key parameters for spoofing:
- Number of simulated drones: Defines how many spoofed drones appear in the system, useful for testing responses.
- Wi-Fi Channel: Choose a channel (1-11) compliant with your region’s regulations.
- Location Source:- GPS: Automatically pulls coordinates from the Minino’s GPS module.- Manual Entry: Input coordinates via the console using the command droneid_set_location [LAT] [LON] (Wiki example).
- BLE Drone: This feature is still in development, so we will keep it simple and leave it disabled for now.
2. Activate the spoofing process and observe how the simulated signals are broadcast.
Note:If you do not have another Minino to visualize the spoofed signals from the Minino, we recommend the OpenDroneID OSM app.
