In the past, I've worked with Faro 3d laser scanners to assist with taking field measurements. 3d scans greatly simplify home and professional projects and I miss having access to a 3d scanner. So I've been working to duplicate some of the functionality in a DIY version.
This version I've made is a significant improvement over the last version.
The hardware is more expensive now put the point clouds are proportionately better.
It is now rasberry PI5 based. this is needed to keep up with the Slamtech RPLidar S3. The PI5 does not have a PRU so stepper control has been off loaded to a Bigtree TMC5160T Stepper driver position control is sent via SPI and angular resolution is limited only by the stepper motor base steps per rev, the gear reducer and microstepping.
