SMDJ64CA is a popular surface-mount Transient Voltage Suppressor (TVS) diode from Littelfuse's SMDJ series. It's designed to protect sensitive electronics from voltage spikes caused by lightning, inductive load switching, ESD, or other transient events.
- Reverse Standoff Voltage (VRWM): 64 V (Maximum continuous working voltage before it starts to conduct)
- Breakdown Voltage (VBR): Min 71.1 V – Max 78.6 V (@ 1 mA test current)
- Clamping Voltage (VC): 103 V (@ peak pulse current)
- Peak Pulse Power Dissipation: 3000 W (3 kW) for 10/1000 µs waveform
- Peak Pulse Current (IPP): 29.1 A (10/1000 µs)
- Polarity: Bidirectional (CA suffix = bidirectional protection)
- Package: DO-214AB (SMC / SMCJ package) – compact surface-mount, suitable for high-density PCBs
- Leakage Current (IR @ VR): Typical 2 µA (very low, good for low-power circuits)
- Operating Temperature: -65°C to +150°C (junction)
- Typical Failure Mode: Short circuit (safe for downstream components)
- Power supply input/output lines
- Telecom, industrial control, automotive electronics
- USB ports, RS-485/RS-232 lines, Ethernet interfaces
- Any circuit where 64 V working voltage needs surge protection (positive and negative transients)
This model is bidirectional, so it's ideal for AC-coupled signals or lines where surges can appear in either polarity. Response time is extremely fast (picoseconds), clamping the voltage to a safe level before damaging ICs.
Alternatives / Equivalents:- Bourns SMLJ64CA (very similar specs)
- Higher power versions in same family: 5.0SMDJ64CA (5 kW), 8.0SMDJ64CA (8 kW) if you need more surge handling
- Other brands often have drop-in compatible parts with matching 64 V standoff and ~103 V clamp
Datasheet is freely available on Littelfuse.com (search SMDJ series) – includes full curves for surge waveforms, derating, etc.
In PCB layout, place it close to the protected line/entry point, with short traces and good ground plane for best performance. Often paired with capacitors for filtering.
