I don't know about USA laws and regulations for cars, but here in Brazil it still is not mandatory to cars have "Black Boxes" to log data.
So many accidents remain unanswered regarding "What really happened here?" Like ones which happen in distant areas, farms, etc.
To find this answer, I think that the ST Sensor Tile (which comes with an accelerometer, gyroscope, magnetometer, barometer and even a microphone) could be used as a "Black Box" for a car.
The accelerometer can be used to measure G-force status and direction, compensated with its gyroscope, and the magnetometer can be used to inform the North-relative position of the car. The barometer can inform us of its altitude; and one of the most important, triggered in the event of high-G, the microphone could log sounds of the accident.
As small as it may be, even with its battery, it can be used for long period logging of data on an SD card.
