Alice Stewart’s awesome e-textile project combines a MaKey MaKey with Electric Paint to create interactive Cross Stitch!
If you’re interested in using Electric Paint on fabric or textiles, make sure to check out the suggested tutorials on the tab above.
Digital Cross Stitch
Alice Stewart’s interactive cross stitch activity introduces those who are unfamiliar with technology to the Internet through a simple animated tutorial.
A piece of cross stitch material has been screen-printed with Electric Paint to create a connection to a computer. Using a Makey Makey which is attached to a thimble that the user wears while stitching, the user connects to an-on screen lesson.
The object becomes a controller that advances the tutorial as each stitch is made, bridging the gap between analog and digital processes.

Paper Interface
Aiming to find a solution to the distraction of the screen, I invented a game that is powered by writing on a piece of paper which has lines screen-printed with Electric Paint.
After being asked to answer a series of simple questions on the paper provided, when the player touches the line with their pen the screen attempts to distract them by popping up with eye-catching notifications and images.
This works via connecting the paint to a Makey Makey which reads each touch of the line as a click. The aim of the game is to avoid looking at the screen, hopefully teaching the player to focus on their given task.
