Let me show you how you can use basic knowledge of electronics to transform your room into something cool!
Bill of MaterialsLet’s start with the components. What you will need is:
- Texas Instruments MSP430 Microcontroller
- HC-05 Bluetooth Module
- 3 Watt RGB Power LEDs
- BC-337 Transistor
- Resistors
- Capacitors
- Some basic electronics components…
Let’s start with the Schematic of the Board. Eagle CAD was used to design the PCB.
The schematic of this project consists of a MSP430G2553 IC which is cross paired toHC-05 Bluetooth module, ie, RX of Bluetooth module is connected to TX of MSP430and the TX of Bluetooth module is connected to RX of MSP430). Three 6-pin, 3WSMD LED’s are used is series ( so as to limit the flow of current through it to belowImax for each color). According to the signal received by the Bluetooth module,PWM will be applied to pins 2.4 (Green), 2.2 (Red) and 2.0 (Blue). This will betransferred to the LED’s by BC337 transistors (used as switches). The LED’s arepowered by a 12 V, 1 Amp adapter with capacitors connected in parallel whichact as filters. A LDO regulator is also used to convert 12V to 3.3V which is theoperating logic level of MSP430 IC used in this project.
These are the two Schematics of the Board.
Board layoutNow let’s move on to the Board Layout of the circuit…
The board layout was designed in two parts, one stacked above the other. The 3 power LEDs require very high power, and hence they need heat sink pads so as to conduct heat. The two boards are connected through two M03 connectors which can be detachedwhen needed.
Here we have the completely routed Board layout. The next step was to fabricate the PCB, I did it using the toner transfer method but you can just order it online for a low cost. Once you have designed the PCB just export the GERBER files and send it to any of the online PCB manufacturers in your area and the PCB will be ready in no time.
Demo & CodeThe App can be made very easily using the MIT App Inventor in which it only has to send the data to the HC-05 Module. This link will help you to make the app in no time- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o-YVvxYiSuk
Now the code of this project was written in the Code Composer Studio and you can find the code here: code_1
ConclusionsAnd that’s it. Just upload the code and connect your app to the lamp and immerse in the world of colors!
There might be some problems varying from person to person but with a little debugging and some help from google I’m sure everything would be fine.See ya and have fun!
