PROJECT NAME: LaunchPad Bluetooth Light Controller
TEAM MEMBERS:
- Zahidul Haq
PROJECT DESCRIPTION
Controls a light bulb wirelessly using MSP430 Bluetooth platform + LaunchPad + Capacitive Touch Pad. The overlying goal was to control simple household appliances wirelessly. This not only solves the problem of accessibility but also can be used to save energy. This can also be used for handicapped people so they can control household appliances using a low-power, low-cost wireless technology such as Bluetooth with a touch of a pad such as the Capacitive Touch Pad. For example, this can be integrated in a wheelchair or a wristwatch.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
- The EZ430-RF2560's runs the Serial Port Profile(SPP) using MindTree's Ethermind Bluetooth Stack.
- The LaunchPad is using the Capacitive Touch BoosterPack User Experience Demo for user interface.
- The SSR switches on AC load(light bulb) with input of at least 3 V from the MSP430.
DEMO OVERVIEW:
- User presses center button of Cap Touch Pad.
- PC processes commands from TouchPad through UART and updates user interface(work in progress)
- PC sends light toggling command to Bluetooth transmitter using UART
- Bluetooth transmitter tranmits command to Bluetooth receiver
- Bluetooth receiver sends received command to LaunchPad.
- LaunchPad sends signal to the solid state relay which turns on the light bulb
PROJECT FEATURES:
- 2x LaunchPad with MSP430G2452 (ultra low power)
- 2x EZ430-RF2560 target boards (wireless+ultra low power)
- 1x Solid State Relay(OPTO 22 Model Z120D10)
- 1x LED light bulb (120V AC, 8W, 75mA)
- 1x 9V Battery
- 1x PC
- Some wires, etc...
CURRENT CONSUMPTION:
Receiver (light off): ~420 uA
Receiver (light on): ~6 mA
Transmitter(on battery board, Scanning): ~8mA
Transmitter(on battery board, Low Power Mode): ~1.8mA

USER'S GUIDE:
Easily integrate the EZ430-RF2560 to control your household applicances such as lights and fans. The solid state relay with a range of 3-33VDC can be interfaced directly with the Digital I/O of LaunchPad as shown in the demo. Also in the demo, a laptop was used to decode the serial output of the CapTouch sensors and output them to the Bluetooth transmitter using built-in UART-USB interface. A PC connection would not be necessary if you can find a way to interface the CapTouch demo on the LaunchPad with the Bluetooth SDK on the EZ430 using UART(email me if you do).
WORK IN PROGRESS:
- Use a photoresistor sensor to send signal if light is on or off
- Access through the internet
- Interactive and user-friendly graphical interface
