Our Story: Why We Built Mesh Node

We didn’t start Mesh Node in a lab. We started it on a trek.

A group of us went trekking with friends, looking forward to time in nature and a break from the city. Everything was going well until one of our friends took a different path and got separated from the group. At first, we thought they were just a little behind. But as time passed, concern quickly turned into worry.

We checked our phones and tried calling and messaging — but there was no network. No signal. No internet. We were completely disconnected. The terrain made it difficult to search, and there was no way to coordinate properly.

It took us nearly 3 to 4 hours to finally find our friend. Thankfully, they were safe. But those hours felt long and stressful, and the experience stayed with us even after the trek ended.

During that time, one question kept coming back to us: why does communication completely disappear in places where it’s needed the most? We live in a world full of technology, yet in remote areas, staying connected becomes almost impossible.

That moment became our motivation. We wanted a simple and reliable way to communicate without depending on mobile networks. Something that could work anywhere, powered by people and community rather than towers and infrastructure.

That idea led us to explore mesh communication and long-range wireless technology, inspired by community-driven systems. Over time, that vision turned into Mesh Node — a device built for safety, connection, and peace of mind when signals fail.

Mesh Node is our answer to that experience on the trail. It’s not meant to replace smartphones, but to support you when they stop working. A reliable companion for moments when staying connected truly matters.

🔗 Easy Bluetooth Connection with the Meshtastic App📷

Mesh Node connects to your phone through Bluetooth in just a few steps. Once connected, you can use the Meshtastic app to handle everything — sending messages, checking device status, viewing battery levels, and managing location sharing.

There’s no need for mobile data or network coverage. Simply open the app, connect to Mesh Node, and continue communicating normally. It’s designed to feel familiar, simple, and stress-free, even when you’re far away from cellular signals.

📡 Long-Range Messaging with LoRa (Up to 4–5 km)

Mesh Node uses LoRa long-range communication to send and receive messages over long distances — up to 4–5 kilometers in open areas. This means you can stay in touch even when there is no mobile network, no internet, and no Wi-Fi.

Once your message is sent, it travels directly from one device to another using LoRa. This makes Mesh Node especially useful in remote locations, outdoor trips, and situations where regular communication simply doesn’t work. It’s a simple and reliable way to stay connected when you need it most.

📍 Share Your Exact Location

Mesh Node makes it easy to share your exact location with others. With built-in GPS and phone GPS support, the device can capture your latitude and longitude accurately and send it through the network.

Whether you’re traveling, exploring outdoors, or in a remote area, you can let others know exactly where you are. Location sharing helps with coordination, safety, and peace of mind — especially when mobile networks are unavailable.

🛰️ Built-In GPS for Accurate Location

Mesh Node comes with a built-in GPS, so it can find your location on its own without depending on mobile networks. It continuously determines where you are and shows accurate location information when you need it.

With GPS inside the device, Mesh Node can share precise latitude and longitude with other users, helping friends or team members know exactly where you are. This is especially useful during outdoor travel, remote exploration, or emergency situations where network-based location services may not work.

In addition to its own GPS, Mesh Node can also use the GPS of the connected smartphone through the Meshtastic app. This provides added flexibility and can help improve location accuracy or reduce power usage when needed.

Mesh Node is equipped with the BME280 environmental sensor, which continuously measures temperature, humidity, and air pressure. These readings help you better understand your surroundings, especially in outdoor, remote, or off-grid environments where conditions can change quickly.

One of the most critical features enabled by the accelerometer is fall detection. Mesh Node monitors sudden, unusual movements that may indicate a fall or accident. If such an event is detected, the device can trigger alerts or send notifications to connected users through the network.

📡 LoRa Mesh & LoRaWAN Support for Extended Communication

Mesh Node is built with support for both LoRa Mesh and LoRaWAN, allowing it to operate in different communication setups depending on the environment. These two technologies work together to provide long-range, flexible, and reliable communication — especially when traditional networks are unavailable.

🔗 How LoRa Mesh Works

In a LoRa mesh network, devices communicate directly with one another instead of depending on a central tower or internet connection. Each Mesh Node acts as both a sender and a receiver. When a message is sent, nearby Mesh Nodes can receive it and pass it along to the next device.

This creates a chain of communication where messages “hop” from one node to another. Because of this, communication is not limited to the range of a single device. Every additional Mesh Node strengthens the network and increases overall coverage.

🌐 How LoRaWAN Works

LoRaWAN is designed for wide-area communication using gateways. When gateways or compatible infrastructure are available, Mesh Node can connect to larger networks, enabling extended reach and future integration with broader systems.

This adds flexibility, allowing Mesh Node to operate both in community-driven mesh environments and in areas where LoRaWAN infrastructure exists.

📶 How Mesh Node Extends Range in Real Use

In real-world use, LoRa mesh support allows Mesh Node devices to work together as an ecosystem. For example, if two users are too far apart to communicate directly, intermediate Mesh Nodes can relay the message, extending the effective range.

This makes communication more reliable during group travel, outdoor adventures, events, or emergencies. The more Mesh Nodes present, the wider and stronger the network becomes. Instead of relying on a single point of connection, communication is shared and distributed.

🧩 Mesh Node – Component Breakdown

Mesh Node is built using carefully selected hardware components that work together to deliver long-range communication, smart sensing, and reliable everyday use. Below is a clear breakdown of each core component and its role in the device.

📡 RAK4630 (Core Module)

The RAK4630 is the brain of Mesh Node. It handles LoRa communication, Bluetooth connectivity, and device control. This module enables long-range messaging, mesh networking, and smooth interaction with the Meshtastic app.

🏃 Accelerometer

The accelerometer detects movement and motion patterns. It enables activity tracking such as walking, running, jogging, and swimming, and also supports fall detection for safety and emergency awareness.

🛰️ GPS Module

The GPS module allows Mesh Node to determine its exact location independently, without needing mobile networks. It enables accurate latitude and longitude sharing and supports route tracking in outdoor and remote environments.

🔋 Battery Connector

The battery connector allows users to attach their own compatible battery. This flexible design makes battery replacement easy and lets users choose a battery capacity that suits their usage.

📡 GPS Antenna

The dedicated GPS antenna improves satellite signal reception, helping the GPS module deliver faster and more accurate location data, especially in open and outdoor areas.

🔗 BLE Antenna

The Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) antenna ensures a stable and efficient connection between Mesh Node and your smartphone. It helps maintain smooth communication with the Meshtastic app while consuming minimal power.

🔘 Buttons

Physical buttons allow direct interaction with Mesh Node. They can be used for actions like navigating the interface, sending preset messages, or triggering specific functions without needing the phone.

🔔 Buzzer

The buzzer provides audible alerts for incoming messages, notifications, and important events. This ensures you don’t miss updates even when the device isn’t in view.

🖥️ OLED 0.96″ Display

The 0.96-inch OLED display shows messages, battery level, time, and device status clearly. It is bright, easy to read, and power-efficient, making it ideal for long-term use.

🌡️ BME280 Sensor

The BME280 sensor measures temperature, humidity, and air pressure. It adds environmental awareness to Mesh Node, helping users understand surrounding conditions during travel and outdoor activities.

🔌 USB Type-C Port

The Type-C port supports fast and convenient charging. It ensures easy compatibility with modern chargers and cables and supports efficient power management.

🌈 RGB LED

The RGB LED provides visual indicators for battery status, notifications, and device states. Different colors can quickly communicate important information at a glance.

The LoRa antenna is responsible for long-range wireless communication. It enables message transmission over several kilometers and supports mesh networking by relaying messages between nearby Mesh Nodes.
