Christmas is almost here, and I wanted something bright and colorful for my decorations — so I built a super bright 3W NeoPixel LED driver module.
This small board can drive a 3W RGB LED using the WS2811 IC, and you can chain multiple modules together to make them work in sync, just like addressable NeoPixels.
It’s a great DIY lighting solution for projects, room decor, or festive setups — with WLED support for custom animations and colors.
How It WorksAt the heart of this project is the WS2811 LED controller IC. Instead of connecting it to small 5mm or SMD LEDs, I used its output pins to drive MOSFETs.
The MOSFETs control the current going into a 3W RGB LED, giving full color and brightness control via the WS2811’s PWM output.
You can connect multiple modules in series (data out → data in) and control them all through WLED or any other WS2811-compatible controller.
3D Printed DiffuserFor the light module, I designed a simple translucent diffuser shell to spread the LED light evenly. I printed it using JLC3DP’s 8001 translucent resin, which gives a smooth, frosted finish that softens the light beautifully.
The part came out clean and ready to use — no sanding or painting needed.
Step-by-Step Build1. Design & Order the PCBI created the circuit in EasyEDA and ordered it from JLCPCB. Their PCB quality is excellent and works perfectly for this small LED driver.
2. Assemble the ComponentsOnce the PCBs arrived, I soldered the WS2811 IC, MOSFETs, and supporting components. Finally, I connected the RGB LED and tested each channel.
3. Print the DiffuserI uploaded my diffuser model to JLC3DP, selected 8001 translucent resin, and got it printed. The print arrived in just a few days and fit perfectly on top of the LED module.
4. Power & TestI powered the module with 5V and connected it to a WLED controller. Everything worked perfectly — smooth transitions, vivid colors, and great brightness.
ResultsThe 3W NeoPixel module produces incredibly bright and colorful light. The translucent diffuser softens the glare, making it ideal for ambient lighting, decorations, or art pieces.
You can chain multiple modules to create custom lighting setups — all controllable through WLED, Arduino, or any WS2811-compatible system.
