In this project I will show you how to build a project using shift registers. A shift register is an IC that is comprised of flip-flops that has the output of one flip-flop connected to the input. As shift registers are made like this it means that data is able to be 'shifted' from one output to another.
We will use this in this project by supplying a positive data signal into the input of one of the shift registers and then connecting multiple shift register ICs to reach the desired length. I will connect the output of the shift registers to some LEDs to visualise the affect of them.
you will have two ways of entering data into the input of the shift registers. The first will be a simple push button that will allow you to press the button to enter the amount of positive bits in to the array and the other will use a 555 timer circuit with a variable duty cycle to automatically enter the data signals into the array.
I chose to lay my design out on to a PCB I have provided that Gerber files so you can get your own manufactured if you would like or you could just build the circuit on a piece of perf board. You can extend or shorten the length of the snake by just adding or removing the shift registers and LEDs.
