Overview
This project is to fulfill the requirements of the MEGR 3171 IOT Project and the idea for this project came from the small nagging feeling we always get when we're away from home for long periods of time. Wouldn't it be great to know if someone decided to try to get into your home or your room if you have roommates? This system detects when there's motion in the designated area and will send an alert to the IFTTT app on your phone when it does.
This simple motion based infrared sensor circuit detects when there is a disruption in the motion sensors light waves and sends a voltage signal out to its photon board, lighting an led to show its been activated. This photon sends a publish event to the particle cloud which in turn is recognized by the second photon that lights its led when activated and controls a buzzer to alert the intruder they have been caught. The IFTTT app simultaneously recognizes this published event in our case is "motion-detected" and sends an alert to your phone to make you aware of the unwanted guest.
Circuit
The motion sensor photon circuit was wired giving 5 volt power on the orange wire to the motion sensor, from the Vin port supplied by the photon, the reference wire (white) is the signal into the photon when motion is detected in the D0 port with the ground as the black wire into the ground port.
The buzzer sensor circuit was wired with 5 volt power from Vin port wired in orange to the buzzer and ground wired in black. Power was only supplied on a 2 second consecutive pulse delay when the second photon recognized the event published by the motion sensor photon.
Sensor Activation
Pictured below is the idle system without any motion detection
After detection of motion the system is turned on and the led's on port D7 are illuminated to show system activation.
The published event is sent to the Particle Cloud and logged to record the motion detection events, and simultaneously sent to the IFTTT app to alert your phone of the intrusion into your living space.
The IFTTT app can be downloaded onto any phone and linked to your personal particle account to monitor specific event publishing and record these events. Once the applet is created in IFTTT for your specific purpose, it can be activated or deactivated at any time.
This system is very basic making it very versatile and can be mounted anywhere with a 5 volt source, which can be provided by a simple phone charger and micro USB port cable. This reduces cost and increases application of this photon system to anywhere you wish to detect motion!
