I’m not a father, but I have met a couple. From what I have gathered from my observations, being a father is about three things: making the most cringe-worthy puns imaginable, embarrassing your wife and kids, and showing up rival dads. Friendly feuds with rival dads can occur in many arenas, but yards are often the battlefield of choice and riding lawnmowers are like tactical nukes in that war. I don’t know if Jason Hibbs of Bourbon Moth Woodworking Co. is actually a father, but I have to assume he is after seeing him turn a riding lawnmower into a potato-firing tank.

Hibbs has posted many cool videos on the Bourbon Moth Woodworking YouTube channel, most of which are carpentry tips or showcasing beautiful handmade furniture. But this lawnmower tank is the project most likely to shame rival dads in the neighborhood. Hibbs already had a Toro Timecutter zero turn lawnmower, and rightfully thought it could make for a great tank. The bulk of the work went into constructing the “armor” of the tank body, which was made from plywood and was likely a cake walk given Hibbs' woodworking skill. But this lawnmower tank also features a potato-firing cannon and working tank tracks.

The potato cannon works like most others do: a chamber at the base of the barrel is filled with a flammable aerosol. When that is ignited, it rapidly expands and forces the potato out of the end of the barrel. The tank tracks, on the other hand, are very novel. Sprockets were fabricated with a plasma cutter and attached to each of the lawnmower’s rear wheels. An additional set of free-spinning sprockets are mounted at the front of the tank. The tracks themselves were constructed from composite decking and held together by tow straps dyed black. Three tires on each side provide tension on the tracks. A few stencils, D-rings, and lights complete the look. The finished lawnmower tank works remarkably well, and we can imagine the neighborhood dads all shaking in envy.
