Most people rely on smartwatches, phones and Fitbit to keep track of how many steps they have taken throughout the day to maintain a level of fitness. While it’s easy enough to check those mobile devices to see how many steps you’ve taken, some prefer to have a constant visual aid to increase their motivation, which is where Sarah Hackett’s SLITHER comes in.

SLITHER is a snake-like desktop accessory that illuminates from front to back depending on how many steps are taken and lights up completely when 50,000 steps have been reached.

SLITHER is designed around an Adafruit HUZZAH ESP8266 board, a Hall effect sensor and a magnet, which acts as an on/off switch. The case was created using plywood that’s been CNC routed to house a pair of NeoPixel LED strips for illumination, which are capped using acrylic and PVC to diffuse the LEDs. SLITHER pairs with the Fitbit app, so extensive programming is not needed, but those with a CNC machine, laser cutter, bandsaw and sander will find building the device much easier over hand tools.
