Whether you want to save energy or go easy on your eyes, an E Ink display is a great choice. However, integrating these displays into electronics projects isn’t always smooth sailing. The more affordable options tend to be smaller — often just a few inches across — which limits the applications they are useful for. And if you do come across a larger display that is reasonably priced, chances are the refresh rate will be abysmal.

If these issues have caused you problems in the past, then you might want to take a look at the XIAO ePaper DIY Kit — EE03 that was recently released by Seeed Studio. It is a large, 10.3-inch E Ink display with an unusually fast refresh rate. It is also pretty affordable — you can pick one up, along with a driver board, for under $115.

The device is powered by a XIAO ESP32-S3 Plus microcontroller, integrated directly into the EE03 driver board. This allows the system to work immediately once it is connected to a compatible display panel, dramatically reducing setup complexity compared to many other E Ink development platforms. The display itself offers a resolution of 1404 × 1872 pixels and supports 16 levels of grayscale, which helps give dashboards, images, and text a much richer appearance than simple black-and-white panels.

One of the best features of the kit is its refresh performance. Large E Ink displays are often known for painfully slow update times — sometimes taking 20 seconds or more to fully redraw the screen. The EE03 addresses this issue with an integrated timing controller designed specifically for high-speed driving of the 10.3-inch panel. In practice, the result is refresh times closer to three seconds, making the display far more responsive for time-sensitive applications.

Temperature compensation is also built into the system via an onboard SHT40 sensor. Since E Ink displays are sensitive to environmental conditions, this allows the device to dynamically adjust waveform behavior for more consistent refresh performance across different temperatures.

For developers who want to skip coding entirely, the kit arrives pre-flashed with SenseCraft HMI firmware. This platform allows users to design graphical interfaces using drag-and-drop tools and prebuilt templates, with optional AI assistance to help assemble layouts. Once finished, dashboards and widgets can be deployed to the display in just a few clicks.

With its combination of size, speed, and accessibility, the EE03 kit may make large-format E Ink projects far more practical for hobbyists and developers alike. It is now available in the Seeed Studio shop.
