Those looking for a 8-bit synthesizer will want to take note of the new Macchiato Mini-Synth. Developed by Chicago-based Zeppelin Design Labs, this little yet versatile digital device features a built-in 13-note capacitive-touch keyboard with 2-note polyphony, MIDI IN, and eight control knobs for shaping your sound.

Unlike most kits available today that are limited in their functionality or surprisingly expensive, the Macchiato Mini-Synth packs quite the punch for its small price tag (starting only at $39). But that’s not all, its software can even be hacked and programmed using the Arduino IDE.

In true Maker fashion, you can create the instrument’s cabinet out of a cereal box or specialty cardstock from a local craft store. Optionally, you can order a sleek black plastic enclosure, either as a simple DIY kit or ready-to-play.
