Accent lamps are a great way for makers to express themselves. They don’t even need to provide functional light — they just need to look neat. LightCore3D understands that well and has designed many very cool lamps. Now they’ve released their best design yet: this 3D-printable “Cyber Loop” lamp that is way prettier than it has any right to be.

The overall shape of the lamp is like a cross between a car’s wheel and a “you are here” icon turned on its side. LED lighting effects dramatically enhance that shape. There are several different areas of the lamp with their own distinct lighting, isolated from the other areas. The result is a multi-color feast for the eyes. That’s especially true with animated effects, which really bring everything to life.

There are three main LED features: the “funnel” of the wheel, the outer perimeter of the wheel, and a dozen inner “spokes.” Every single LED is individually addressable, so all of those areas can act independently of the others.

The Cyber Loop lamp is 3D-printable, but LightCore3D is quick to point out that this is not an easy build. There are dozens of parts to print and assembly is a substantial undertaking. If you choose to build your own Cyber Loop, be prepared for a serious project. LightCore3D also hasn’t fully documented the assembly process, so you’ll need to figure out many steps on your own.

On the electronics side, the primary components include an ESP32 development board, a 2-meter length of WS2812B individually addressable RGB LEDs (144 LEDs per meter), and an appropriate power supply (5V, at least 6A). You’ll also need a barrel jack, some resistors and capacitors, and cables.

The ESP32 runs WLED firmware, which provides control over the LEDs and their behavior. Divide the LEDs to sensible groups, then create some LED effects presets to cycle through and enjoy the show.
