These Adorable Oversized LEDs Glow So Good
This cute LED lamp proves that the “scale it up and make it glow” recipe is always succeeds.
Here’s a recipe that always succeeds: find a very common thing that is small, 3D-print it big, and make it glow. Don’t believe me? Check out Dbmaking’s adorable oversized sound-reactive LED lamp set.
This lamp is as cute as they come. It has four “regular” LEDs on the right and what I think is an ESP32 on the left — all oversized, of course. If you haven’t made the connection, that is the WLED logo. WLED is wildly popular firmware for ESP32-based projects that makes it easy to control individually addressable RGB LEDs (WS2812B, WS2811, and SK6812) through a self-hosted webserver.
And, of course, this lamp relies on WLED to control the strip of WS2812B LEDs that provide the glowing illumination. WLED runs on a ESP32-WROOM-30 development board on a custom PCB that simplifies wiring. That PCB also includes a relay and fuse for safety. An INMP441 microphone enables the sound-reactive feature, so the lamp can dance in color to your music.
All of the physical parts, including the LED diffusers, are 3D-printable. They’re separate pieces, so you don’t need a fancy multi-material 3D printer to make them.
The result is a charming declaration of geekiness that should put a smile on every maker’s face and proves that the “scale it up and make it glow” recipe is foolproof.
