Home security systems are generally composed of a number of devices, each with a unique set of capabilities. A door sensor will tell you when a door is opened, an occupancy sensor will tell you when someone enters a room, and an infrared camera can detect movement in the dark. So if you want a really smart security system, you will have to select all of the sensors you want and install them in just the right spots.

An engineer who goes by the handle Magmabow approached smart home design from another angle by designing a single, tiny board that handles most security functions a person could want.

Rather than building a network of single-purpose devices, this compact system combines a wide array of sensors into a flexible, reconfigurable platform. At its core is an ESP32-S3 microcontroller, giving the device built-in wireless connectivity and enough processing power to manage multiple sensing modes simultaneously. The result is a modular security tool that can be deployed quickly and reassigned as needed.

The board integrates an impressive collection of sensing hardware. A time-of-flight distance sensor enables precise proximity detection up to four meters, while a thermal infrared sensor can identify human presence based on body heat. A high-sensitivity light sensor adds another layer of awareness, capable of detecting changes such as lights being switched on, shadows passing, or cabinets opening. For physical interactions, both a Hall effect sensor and a reed switch allow the system to detect doors, windows, or even subtle magnetic movement through walls.

Motion tracking is handled through a dual-accelerometer setup. A low-power three-axis accelerometer continuously monitors for anomalies, waking a more advanced nine-axis sensor only when needed. This staged approach helps conserve energy while still capturing detailed movement data when it matters. A temperature sensor rounds out the package, offering additional context for environmental monitoring or smart home integration.

Users can switch between eight different operating modes, ranging from proximity detection to ultra-low-power door monitoring. This flexibility makes it particularly useful for temporary installations, such as securing a home during travel or monitoring activity during renovations. Instead of purchasing and installing multiple devices, users can reposition and reconfigure a single unit in minutes.

Alerts are delivered via a Discord webhook, providing a simple and cost-effective notification system. Additional hardware features — such as long-range wired communication support, extensive circuit protection, and flexible expansion connectors — make the board suitable for both home use and integration into larger security setups.

By combining multiple sensing technologies into a single, adaptable device, Magmabow’s design challenges the conventional approach to home security — offering a smarter, more efficient alternative to sensor sprawl.
