The Stop Face Touching Device Does Exactly What It Sounds Like

This sci-fi-looking, head-mounted contraption helps its wearer stop touching their face.

Although it’s human nature to tough your face – for whatever reason – such behavior can facilitate the transmission of viruses and other diseases floating around. If pure willpower to do this less doesn’t work for you, then DesignMaker's head-mounted STOP Face Touching Device can take a more active role.

While it may resemble something that Professor Xavier from the X-Men might wear, the hat doesn’t give you telekinetic powers. Instead it does nearly the opposite, smacking you on the forehead when your hands and fingers approach your face. Four IR sensors are implemented for detection and it uses an Arduino Nano for control.

Head-paddling is via a motor and springs system, and in addition to smacking you, the paddler features a display that shows just how many times you’ve touched your face. Interestingly, the wearer can’t really see it, so perhaps there’s an element of public shaming involved.

DesignMaker admits this is a bit of a silly project, but hopefully it provides a bit of entertainment, and maybe even a reminder to think about what your hands are doing. Silly or not, it’s a really well designed piece, featuring adjustable sizing, wire guides, and even custom decals. One interesting tip from the video is that he’s using heat shrink to restrict the viewing area of his sensors, applicable in a number of projects!
