The µ Spec Mk II Multi-Sensor Measurement Unit Packs a Spectrometer, Thermal Imaging and More

The device features a VL53L5CX ToF sensor, MLX90640 thermal sensor, spectral sensor, light sensor, and more.

Having test and measurement tools on hand makes troubleshooting projects easy, and one of the more useful tools to have on hand is the µ Spec Mk II Multi-Sensor Measurement Unit. Designed by engineer Jayzon Oeve, the µ Spec Mk II is a standalone multi-sensor measurement unit displaying analyzed and processed signals and is outfitted with a 19-channel spectrometer, thermal imaging, and an audio and light spectrum analyzer.

The multitool is equipped with a 480 x 320 touchscreen, a VL53L5CX ToF ranging sensor, an MLX90640 thermocam, and a spectral sensor that grabs data input with 1 + 18 channels. The onboard light sensor can take 480 intensity samples in a 30ms timeframe, while a MEMS-based mic can grab the same number of samples in the same timeframe. The sensors are controlled via an ESP32 microcontroller, although an updated driver is needed to get full functionality from the LIDAR sensor.

While Oeve's µ Spec Mk II Multi-Sensor Measurement Unit is still in its development stage, the multitool project looks to be on track to produce a fully-functional prototype over the next couple of weeks or months. Oeve is already looking to make some improvements for increased functionality, including combining different sensor data for more information about samples, using an SD card to save measurements in CSV format, and mixing a physical reference white for reflection coefficient.
