Do you have a desk companion yet? If not, what are you waiting for? It seems like everyone is either building their own or buying a pre-built desk robot these days. And why not? They add some fun and personality to what might otherwise be yet another dull day spent at one’s desk. Whether it’s a tiny bot that dances to your music or a virtual pet that purrs when you pet it, these tiny gadgets can really brighten up your day.

Redditor aranjello has just created a really interesting desk robot that would be perfect for those who want an inexpensive toy. This cat-shaped companion is made from user-friendly components, so you can easily build your own. Or if you want to save some time, you can get one fully assembled for $15.

The robot is built around a powerful Waveshare RP2040 development board. This is a very hackable platform, so you can customize the system to suit your needs perfectly if you are willing to put in the time. This is paired with an SH1106 monochrome OLED display that serves as the face. The hardware is installed in a 3D-printed case, and power is supplied via a USB-C cable.

The robot is 2.5 inches wide, 2.25 inches tall, and 1.15 inches deep — but since the 3D model files are freely available, that could be customized if desired. Aside from keeping you company, aranjello also notes that the device is perfect for rubber duck debugging sessions.

If you would like to buy the robot, you can go with either just the electronics for $10, or a finished product for $15. Seven color options are available for the finished product.
