Techbase's ModBerry 500 Industrial IoT Systems Get a Raspberry Pi Compute Module 4 Upgrade

Available in Mini, Standard, and Max configurations, these IIoT modules support up to the top-end 8GB RAM 32GB eMMC Compute Module 4.

Techbase has become the latest company to adopt the freshly-launched Raspberry Pi Compute Module 4 and its new dual-connector form factor, announcing a variant of its Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) ModBerry 500 embedded computer that swaps the older Compute Module 3 for the new shiny.

"Our device ModBerry 500CM4 is now available with latest, fourth gen. Raspberry Pi Compute Module 4," the company writes of the new launch. "Upgraded ModBerry 500 device offers higher performance, thanks to quad-core [Arm] Cortex-A72 processor with higher computing frequency, up to 8GB LPDDR4-3200 SDRAM, up to 32GB eMMC Flash and optional features, including Gigabit Ethernet, PCI-Express 2.0 for M.2 SSD and wireless communication, Wi-Fi 2.4/5GHz/BT 5.0. ModBerry 500 maintains low power consumption and optimal price of this solution."

"The ModBerry 500CM4 device allows use of up to 3 expansion modules, increasing its capabilities with additional I/Os, providing support for additional modems and wireless communication modules, and adding new features such as accelerometer and opto-isolation."

Exactly which features come as standard, however, varies. The core ModBerry 500CM4 includes four digital outputs, four digital inputs, a 1-Wire interface, gigabit Ethernet, USB, and a real-time clock, along with the buyer's choice of Raspberry Pi Compute Module 4 models up to the top-end model with 8GB of RAM and 32GB eMMC storage.

The Mini configuration adds a single RS-232/485 port; Standard adds two RS-232/485 ports, four digital input/output (DIO) channels, a single PCI Express connector, and optional HDMI; the Max, meanwhile, includes everything from the Standard model alongside four analogue to digital converters (ADCs), an extra PCI Express connector, and optional CAN bus. Expansion cards then offer Wi-Fi, Zigbee, LTE/3G/GPRS cellular, Bluetooth, and GPS connectivity.

CNX Software, which brought the launch to our attention, has found the parts available for pre-order starting at €230 (around $272) on the IIoT Shop; more information, meanwhile, is available on the Techbase website.
