STMicro's STM32 IoT Discovery Kit Bundles MCU Board, Sensors, Radios, and a Secure Element

Bundle includes FreeRTOS support, Amazon Web Services integration, a range of MEMS sensors, and Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and NFC radios.

STMicroelectronics has announced the launch of a new STM32 Discovery Kit development bundle designed for the Internet of Things and built around the company's STM32 microcontroller.

"The hardware comprises an STM32L4+ microcontroller board that contains an extensive selection of ST MEMS sensors, an STSAFE-A110 secure element, Bluetooth 4.2 and Wi-Fi modules, and an NFC tag with printed antenna for flexible, low-power communication with cloud servers," the company explains of its latest launch. "Coming with the X-CUBE-AWS v2.0 STM32Cube Expansion Pack, the kit can be used as a reference design to simplify and accelerate completion of the final product."

The platform is designed to be used with the FreeRTOS real-time operating system and is an Amazon Web Services (AWS)-qualified device, ready to connect to the cloud platform out-of-the-box. Various AWS-native functions, including firmware over-the-air (FOTA) functionality, are provided by a FreeRTOS AWS connectivity framework which also handles communication with the onboard STSAFE-A110 secure element.

The board itself includes an Arm Cortex-M4 processor, 2MB of flash memory, 640kB of RAM, digital and analog peripherals, and a hardware accelerator for cryptographic tasks. A number of on-board sensors are featured, including an HTS221 capacitive relative humidity and temperature sensor, LIS3MDL three-axis magnetometer, LSM6DSL 3D accelerometer and gyroscope, VL54L0X time-of-flight and gesture-detection sensor, and a pair of omnidirectional microphones, plus an absolute output barometer.

The bundle is being launched for $54, STMicro has confirmed, with the X-CUBE-AWS V2.0 STM32Cube Expansion Pack available as a free download. More details can be found on the official product page.
